It’s Hard to Get a Life (But That Doesn’t Mean You Shouldn’t Try)

Take a couple of minutes to check out this August 14th, 2011 post from writer/blogger James Hoffmann on his site jimseven.

I love that he differentiates between ‘consuming’ and ‘making’, and recognizes that he has been doing more of the former than the latter. He’s chosen to stop writing the blog he loves, quitting cold turkey, in order to get out and experience more of the real, non-digital world.

I absolutely see where he’s coming from. The biggest point of Habicurious/Seeking:Shelter has been to experiment with differentiating it from the bin of constant rehash: it’s about ‘making’ and ‘doing’, trying, failing, succeeding, looking, thinking, feeling and, ultimately, learning, all from the perspective of where we live, and most often seen through my personal goggles. It’s active vs. passive. I think we need way more individual action and a whole lot less talking about what everyone else’s doing.

Best of luck to James Hoffmann on his quest to get a real, interesting, useful life that he’s proud of.  Not easy.
