Eats, Shoots and Frames

The Irony of Knowledge & Skill Development

For the past few weeks I’ve been fashioning a built in wall-to-wall headboard/storage frame in our master bedroom. It has been a zero cost project as I’ve used leftover framing and reclaimed finish materials from other projects around the house. It’s good to see these piles shrink and to see my creation near completion. It’s looking good and I think I got it mostly right.

But will it ever really be done?

The irony of improving my skills in building and woodworking is that as soon as I ‘finish’ a project I am immediately aware of how I might have completed the project more effectively with more precise results. If I made the headboard a second time I know I could do it in a fraction of the time with a more aesthetically and technically pleasing outcome. Now I need to resist the temptation to remove and re-trim all the facings and futz with the recessed boxes.

It strikes me that learning is at once a deep and satisfying joy and a cruel and dogged mistress.
